NEWS UPDATE 2010
Refurbishments: The work of
re-roofing the first floor Studio lounge is now complete. We have
had a thick layer of heat-insulation material included, and this
has made a noticeable difference to the warmth and comfort of the
room.
The work also included the flat roofs over the ballroom bar and
the two stage dressing rooms. In the long term, we hope to
achieve some cost savings, using less gas and reducing the
club’s ‘carbon footprint’.
Function bookings: Our new Bookings Secretary,
Mrs Debbie Hewitt, is now the person to ring if you wish to hold
an event at the club. Her numbers are: 01924 – 475 - 414,
and mobile: 07-77-36-09-526.
The club has five public rooms, and Debbie will be pleased to
advise on which would be best suited to your event.
Family History
Our growing family history group is now
concentrating mainly on tracing Irish ancestors – thanks to
the specialist research skills of our tutor, Lynne Schofield (one
side of Lynn’s family hails from County Roscommon).
About a dozen members of the group will shortly be making a trip
to Ireland to pursue their researches and maybe meet up with a
few long lost relatives. No doubt those researches will be
accompanied by plenty of good Irish entertainment and a bit of
‘the craic’.
Other research visits will be to the Leeds Diocesan Archives at
Hinsley Hall in Leeds and to Borthwick Hall Historical Research
Centre in York.
The group’s new term begins on February 4, and the fee is
£50 for the whole of the ten week course. Classes are held
each Thursday morning, from 10 am to 12 noon, for beginners, and
Thursday afternoon, 2-m-4pm, for intermediates and
improvers.
If you would like to join one of the classes, give Denis a ring
on 01924-503758, or just turn up on Thursday, February
4.
Singing For Fun
Three new arrivals in January boosted the singing
group’s numbers to 24, and the repertoire continues to
grow, with our two leaders, Frances Bernstein and Jane Edwardson.
Another charity concert is under discussion, probably in
conjunction with the Batley Audio Visual Club, with songs chosen
to link up with the subject matter of their excellent
photographic and video displays.
As with all singing groups, we could do with a few more male
voices. We currently have seven, so ideally we could do with
another ten or so, to balance the group nicely. If you’d
like to come along – and it really is very good fun –
give Denis a ring on 01924-503758.
Each session costs £2, and we meet every Wednesday
afternoon, from 2pm to 4 pm, with a short coffee break half way
through. Lots of new friendships have been made within the group
as total strangers have got to know each other, and arranged
other activities such as theatre and concert visits – and
even allotment sharing – between themselves.
