Social Club news round up, Summer
2011.
The Club is making a big effort this year to reduce its
energy costs, CO2 emissions and carbon footprint - all those
environmental improvements you constantly read about in the
newspapers these days.
We have applied for funding under a new government scheme,
the Community Buildings Energy Grant programme, which is being
administered locally by Kirklees Council. Our bid is currently
being assessed, and includes two new central heating boilers to
replace the current single boiler which is an estimated 30 years
old, and much less efficient than a modern one.
We also hope to have the entire social club building
cavity-wall-insulated - yes, checks have revealed that there is a
suitable cavity, despite the parochial hall having been built in
1935. An additional layer of roof insulation in the void above
the ballroom is also planned, as well as the installation of low
energy lighting throughout.
A modern, more efficient cellar cooling system is also on
the cards. If we are successful, and can go ahead with all these
projects, the overall effect should be a reduction in gas and
electricity bills of almost 50 per cent. Equally important, from
the point of view of everyone who uses the club, is that cost
savings like this all help to ensure that the club will remain
financially viable and able, in the long term, to continue to
provide all the varied activities it provides today.
We are pleased to report that the private function element
of the club's activities remains buoyant, despite the fact that
many local families have been hit by the recession. And just to
prove that when times get hard, people seem more determined than
ever to enjoy themselves, attendances at our regular weekly
dances have also shown welcome increases in recent weeks.
We are constantly looking at new ways of bringing different
entertainment activities to the club, and have recently been in
touch with our friends over the border in Lancashire, where
traditional jazz is a remarkably popular and thriving activity,
with lots of bands and weekly jazz clubs. The enthusiasts we have
been in touch with have all been very helpful with advice, and
now we need to know if there are enough trad jazz fans out there
in our area who would support such a venture.
If you are one of them please give Denis a call on 01924-503758.
